Facts and History about Bremen Airport

Bremen Airport - All Information on Bremen Airport (BRE)

Bremen Airport (German: Flughafen Bremen) is the international gateway located about 3.5 kilometers south of the city of Bremen in Northern Germany.

The beginnings of the airport date back to the early 20th century.

A local aerospace club, Bremer Verein für Luftschiffahrt, conducted experimental flights at the site in 1910. Infrastructure in 1913 was geared towards aircraft operations instead of the initially envisaged airships. Several wooden hangars were erected.

During World War I, the Airport was under military administration, and civilian operations ceased. After the war, the Airport only reopened in 1920, with Dutch airline KLM beginning scheduled flights to Amsterdam.

The National Assembly authorized investment into upgraded facilities at the Airport. A few years later, the airplane manufacturer Focke-Wulf was founded on a site adjacent to the airfield.

In the 1950s, the passenger terminal complex was reconstructed. Shortly, Lufthansa began its scheduled flights to the facility. It also established a flying school (Lufthansa Flight Training) at the Airport.

In the 1960s, the Airport saw an increase in enplanements in Bremen.

In 1971, it also installed a radar system on the southern perimeter of the Airport.

1989 was the first year that the Airport had more than one million passengers. The current terminal building was opened in 1998.

In January 2016, the Airport's operator announced that the main terminal building would undergo significant redesign and renovation works until 2018.

Among the changes to the facility include the merging of Terminals 1, 2, and 3.

Today, the Airport consists of one main passenger terminal building with three interconnected terminals.

It also features several shops, restaurants, service facilities, five aircraft stands equipped with jet bridges, and some other stands for mid-sized aircraft on the apron.

As of this update, Ryanair uses another more basic facility to the west of the main terminal called Terminal E, which only features walk-boarding and check-in counters 1E-4E.

The official currency of Germany is the Euro. The currency sign for the Euro is € while the code is EUR.

The US dollars (US$) are not generally accepted, but you can keep a small supply of dollars with you when you go to Germany.

Dollars are good to have on hand in case of an emergency or if you cannot get any local currency.

Amenities at the facility include ample dining choices, shopping, and facilities like restrooms, ATMs, and many more. A currency exchange center is also available at the Airport.

Bremen Airport's International Air Transport Association (IATA) code is constantly referred to as BRE throughout this content.

This gateway sits 4 meters above sea level at 53°02′51″N and 008°47′12″E in Bremen, Germany.
